Rhinoplasty can alter the appearance of the nose in a number of ways. Dr. Godek says many patients who request this procedure would like to reduce or enhance the size of the nasal bridge, recontour a “bulbous” or upturned nasal tip, adjust the size or shape of the nostrils, correct nasal misalignment, or improve symmetrical irregularities. He says correction of breathing challenges posed by problems within the nasal structure is also a common reason patients consider rhinoplasty at his practice. In terms of candidacy requirements for the procedure, Dr. Godek says patients should be at least 16 years of age, in relatively good general health, and have reasonable expectations for what nasal surgery can accomplish in terms of their personal needs and goals. During his initial consultation with patients, Dr. Godek notes that he can often utilize advanced Mirror® 3D imaging technology to show them what the potential results of surgery may look like. He says this can ultimately help patients visualize the possible outcome and get a clear look at just how much of a cosmetic difference the surgery is capable of creating.
As for the rhinoplasty procedure itself, Dr. Godek explains that this procedure is most often performed in a certified ambulatory surgery center. Patients are resting safely with general anesthesia under the care of a board-certified anesthesiologist, which makes the procedure safe and comfortably tolerated. Specific rhinoplasty techniques vary among patients depending on their treatment goals and their unique needs; however, Dr. Godek notes that he strives to provide each patient with a “limited-touch” surgical approach. This method utilizes techniques designed to minimize harm to nasal tissues and reduce bruising and swelling following the procedure. Dr. Godek says that residual scars from rhinoplasty should be virtually unnoticeable—even upon close inspection—due to the precise placement of the incisions in discreet areas. As far as recovery from rhinoplasty is concerned, Dr. Godek says most patients can expect to resume their normal daily routines after approximately one week. Swelling and bruising are common side effects and should dissipate as the nose continues to heal after surgery.
